Professional competencies set by the MELS
This section will eventually list the 12 competencies set by Le Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) that are required for ESL teachers in Quebec. Here are the ones mastered by me so far.
- Act as a professional inheritor, critic, and interpreter of knowledge or culture when teaching students. [Competency no. 1]
World globalization brings us, more than ever before, exposure to different nations, cultures and religions. As a future professional teacher, I consider myself aware and continuously attentive to those notions through the medias and the people surrounding me. I followed different History courses and I certainly developed an interest toward the different cultures brought to me and their history. I would define myself as an individual that works and can relate well with different generations and their particular specificities and interests.
- Communicate clearly in the language of instruction, both orally and in writing, using correct grammar, in various contexts related to teaching. [Competency no. 2]
The Language Awareness course definitely constituted an aid to push even further my understanding of English and its phonology, its morphology and syntax. Here is a - research paper - created for the English Academic Research and Writing course that reveals my writing ability level.
- Integrate information and communications technologies (ICT) in the preparation and delivery of teaching/learning activities and for instructional management and professional development purposes [Competency no. 8]
Both the Becoming an ESL Teacher course and a three-year Computer Graphics technique program made me master different kinds of tools and softwares, designed, in most cases, for industrial purposes, to an advanced level. Joint to this portfolio is a link to a - web site - I created and a small extract of my Computer Graphic technique final project which consists of a - movie magazine - .
- Engage in professional development individually and with others [Competency no. 11]
Being in touch with a community through meetings and discussion forums is a must for both teachers and apprentices. As I am in constant communication with my peers through specific forums, I also organized and commented an - interview - with an actual ESL teacher, discussing different issues related to the profession.
- Demonstrate ethical and responsible professional behaviour in the performance of his or her duties. [Competency no. 12]
To facilitate your comprehension of both my teaching philosophy and my values, I incorporated my personal conception of teaching through a - concept map and personal reflections -.
